This glossary can help you prepare for the IELTS writing tasks related to money and happiness.

achieve
verb
Successfully bring about or reach (a desired objective or result) by effort, skill, or courage.
Example: While some people believe that money is a major factor in achieving happiness, some others tend to oppose that view and feel that money has nothing to do with happiness.
comfortable
adjective
(especially of clothes or furnishings) providing physical ease and relaxation.
Example: Without money, it would be very difficult to live a comfortable life and hence it is easy to see why a person cannot be happy without money.
content
adjective
In a state of peaceful happiness.
Example: Happiness is a very important emotion and it is required for everyone to be content in life.
crucial
adjective
Decisive or critical, especially in the success or failure of something.
Example: Happiness plays a crucial role in the life of every person.
documentary
noun
Using pictures or interviews with people involved in real events to provide a factual report on a particular subject.
Example: I recently saw a documentary on BBC in which a millionaire sent his son on a real-life internship to take up odd jobs.
logical
adjective
Of or according to the rules of logic or formal argument.
Example: I feel that the only logical conclusion is that money has nothing to do with happiness.
luxury
Adjective
A state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense (Noun). Luxurious or of the nature of a luxury (Adjective).
Example: Right from daily meals to luxury homes, nothing comes for free.
oppose
verb
Disagree with and attempt to prevent, especially by argument.
Example: While some people believe that money is a major factor in achieving happiness, some others tend to oppose that view and feel that money has nothing to do with happiness.
strongly
adverb
With great power or strength.
Example: I strongly believe that money and happiness are different concepts altogether.
survival
noun
The state or fact of continuing to live or exist, typically in spite of an accident, ordeal, or difficult circumstances.
Example: Without that survival amount, the level of happiness of a person does not increase with the money that he earns in excess.
